Brothers Frank and Chris Pierzynski grew up in the same rough neighborhood of Brooklyn only to find themselves on completely different paths. Now, in 1973, Frank is a captain in the local precinct of the NYPD and Chris is finishing up a 12-year prison stint for murder. When Chris is released early, he tries to fight off criminal temptations for the sake of family but soon falls into his old ways. Now with his job on the line and the fate of his brother in his hands, Frank must decide where his true loyalties lie.

In search of the American dream, Ewa Cybulski and her sister, Magda, sail to Ellis Island, only to be separated with Magda falls ill. With nowhere to go, Ewa quickly falls prey to Bruno, a charming but wicked man who forces her to perform in his nightly burlesque show. There she encounters the dazzling magician Orlando, who sweeps her off her feet and becomes her only chance to reunite with her sister and escape the nightmare.

At the end of World War II, Jimmy Picard, a Native American Blackfoot who fought in France, returned home diagnosed with schizophrenia. He was admitted into the Topeka Military Hospital in Kansas where he met Georges Devereuax, a French anthropologist and psychoanalyst who specialized in Native American culture. The two formed a deep and special relationship as Devereaux used multidisciplinary measures to treat Jimmy for mental and physical ailments, even at times using dreams and memories to unlock the root of his distress. Based on the true story and the findings of Devereaux, the film tells the story of the encounter and friendship of two men who would never have normally met, who embark on a scientific and spiritual journey with an ever-growing complicity and an unknown ending.
